“The professors from the Certified Public Manager Program are part of my business contacts and an excellent, accessible resource when needed. The classes and professors are very thorough and in real time. While you are in class, you are able to resolve or get solutions on current work/project issues.”

Rachel Barrett-Dolcine,CPM

Title while in the program: Chief Executive Officer, Compass Consulting and Training Solutions, LLC
CPM Program: Cohort 2, September 2013-January 2015
How the program benefited her career:
“I provide nonprofit consulting services as a menu option for my business.  Obtaining the CPM distinction will provide me with a competitive edge in the marketplace and add value to my business services.  Clients can rest assured that I have the training and knowledge to provide competent, excellent services.”
Her experience in the program:
I graduated with my MPA from UB in 2010.  While I was able to quickly use the knowledge learned from my MPA to grow professionally, coming back to complete the CPM program offered me the opportunity to get a refresher course on core nonprofit management competencies and hone the skills weaker areas.  The CPM Facilitators, for the most part, were knowledgeable and engaging.  Their vast experience was beneficial for my learning experience.  As a young business owner, completing the CPM program will be extremely beneficial in my business growth.”

Elizabeth Briscoe, CPM

Title while in the program: Executive Director, Action in Maturity, Inc.
CPM Program: Cohort 1, October 2012-February 2014
How the program benefited her career:
“The UB CPM program has benefited my career immensely. It has elevated my professional and managerial skills, and has given me additional confidence in my leadership capabilities. I continue to work as executive director of Action In Maturity, but through the knowledge I gained as a student in the CPM program, I have grown and increased its capacity. AIM has become more entrepreneurial in its operating with earned income and not as dependent on government and private funding.”
Her experience in the program:
“The cohort was extraordinary with my class. We were able to learn from each other and everyone was so open to share their expertise, mistakes that were made, and advice on many issues that were discussed. My capstone project was a wonderful experience; not only developing it but seeing it through to completion. I have now developed a wonderful collaboration with Keswick Multi-care where the seeds of the program were first planted with the capstone!”

Lara Law, CPM

Title while in the program: Director, Youth Empowered Society (YES),a Program of Fusion Partnerships, Inc.
CPM Program: Cohort 2, September 2013-January 2015
How the program benefited her career:
“With a group of currently and formerly homeless youth, and other allies to youth experiencing homelessness, I founded the organization for which I serve as the director about three years ago. Before this role I hadn’t served as upper level management. I was so thankful to go through the CPM to fill in my gaps in learning and understanding. It covered everything from strategic planning to financial literacy to marketing and branding. I’m more confident in my role as a result of the program and I’m sure it will continue to support my work and growth in this field.”
Her experience in the program:
“My cohort made the experience meaningful. It was a small group of interested and interesting nonprofit professionals from whom I learned as much as I did from the course material. I’d definitely recommend the program to other new nonprofit leaders.”

Lindsay Smith, CPM

Title: Sports Communications Coordinator, New York University-Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
CPM Program: Cohort 1, October 2012-February 2014
How the program benefited her career:
“CPM gave me confidence to trust my instincts, and a toolkit to put those instincts into action. With my new job, I have a lot more responsibility and I feel comfortable offering solutions and coming up with new processes and procedures to improve workflow. I consult my CPM materials from time to time and have shared some of them with my new supervisor and coworkers. I had the unique opportunity to move overseas, and I’m happy to say that the skills transferred, especially because I do work for an American university. That Cultural Diversity training certainly helps too!”
Her experience in the program:
“It was an incredible opportunity to come together every month and focus on the aspects of our jobs that often get lost in the shuffle of the day-to-day. Even if some of the information wasn’t new to a few of the more-experienced class members, it was good to revisit and even better to do so in an environment where we could openly discuss sometimes-sensitive topics or ask questions that we may not have felt comfortable voicing in another arena.”

Babila Lima,CPM

Title while in the program: Senior Business Process Improvement Manager, Baltimore City, Department of General Services
CPM Program: Cohort 3
How the program benefited his career:
“The timing of the Certified Public Manager (CPM) program for me was perfect. My matriculation coincided with managing a project for the Department of General Services in the Right of Way Division: to improve the delivery of service based on performance measures important to the public and internal stakeholders, to streamline processes and reduce redundant steps and wasted time, to centralize interagency operations, and to establish a new office. The professional experience of our CPM professors, the case studies and the CPM assignments really buttressed and deepened my understanding of key lean government, stakeholder analysis, policy development and performance management principles important to my work.”
His experience in the program:
“In addition to the very relevant CPM coursework, the other real benefit was the network of other professionals with which I developed relationships over the course of the program. Sitting shoulder to shoulder with CFO, Chief of Staff, Director of Operations and other senior-level public sector managers and decision makers to hash out problems and approaches to ethical, procurement or leadership challenges was an education I would not have received elsewhere. I strongly recommend the Certified Public Manager to anyone committed to public service and leadership in the public sector.”

Tiffany L. Smith, MHS, CPM

Title while in the program: External Affair and Resident Services, Howard County Housing Commission
CPM Program: Cohort 3
How the program benefited her career:
“Having worked in both the private and public sectors I’ve learned that the quality of leadership determines the overall success of a workplace.  A leader sets the tone; gives the organization permission and the parameters to passionately pursue mission-driven activities. A leader knows that investing in the development of staff creates a culture that is equally creative and competent, and empowered with clarity of vision. The Certified Public Manager® Program contributes greatly to the evolution of this type of leader through a structured balance of relevant curricula coupled with practical experience and professional linkages. Upon completion of the program, a Certified Public Manager® is equipped to be this type of leader – a change agent, a transformer and a stabilizer. My ability to serve as a leader in my organization was perfected as a result of my CPM experience.”
